Stereoscopes

The stereoscopes present 3D images. The images presented as illuminated slides enclosed in light boxes are observed through special viewing glasses, creating an intimate experience for the viewer. The subjects have been staged and photographed either in the studio or externally. The work is concerned with ideas of reproduction and illusion and explores an aspect of the history of photography and the presentation of the image. The stereoscopes are part of an ongoing body of works that examine how 3 dimensional and moving images are constructed.

Belfast Stereoscopes 2002
The stereoscopes in this series show images of urban and architectural space and include road signs, advertising logos and an empty skip. The images were shot in belfast against a very blue sky.

Garden Stereoscopes 2001
This set presents tableaux that depict a woman within a formal garden setting. Relating to an earlier video work (‘Faint’, 1999), these images address ideas about hysteria and trance.

Ghost Stereoscopes 1999
These stereoscopics present images of ghosts, ectoplasm and seance apparatus. Spirits and ectoplasm sculptures were set up in the studio and photographed.
