Spiritualism is driven by the idea that spirits maintain contact with the living by paranormal means through mediums. Materialisation mediums act as conduit for the dead. The dead make themselves known to the living either by voice through the body of the medium or by manifesting as ectoplasm and forming in to the figure or face of the dead.

The ectoplasm stereoscopes present images of ghosts, ectoplasm and seance apparatus, which have been staged and photographed in the studio. The work is concerned with ideas of belief, illusion and reproduction, and recalls a time when the new science of photography provided those who wished to believe with the evidence they sought. Presented as illuminated slides enclosed within light boxes the 3D images are observed through special viewing glasses, creating an intimate experience for the viewer.
