In 1999 illycaffe announced a competion for artists of New York's PS1 National and International Studio Program for the creation of a new illy collection; six designs were chosen from Hironori Murai, Jan Kopp, Elizabeth Zawada, Susan MacWilliam, Elke Lehmann and Montserrat Soto. illy collections are numbered and signed editions in limited productions.

Susan MacWilliam | illy collection design: The design is derived from the artist's earlier video work, Faint, 1999, that presents images of a fainting girl (the artist), and her 2000 video, 45rpm, in which a zoetrope is the subject. For the illy design, the artist imagines the coffee cup as a spinning zoetrope with images of a girl repeatedly raising her hand to her forehead as if overcome, or about to faint.
