Experiment M
1999, Installation with 2 Videos, Both B+W, Silent, 5mins 43secs.
This work is based on the case of Kathleen Goligher and Dr.William Jackson Crawford. Between 1914 and 1920 Crawford researched the mediumistic phenomena occurring at the seances of the Goligher Circle, Belfast. ‘Experiment M’ is an installation, which comprises a set and a two screen video work. The set recreates the space where the seances and experimental research took place. Props have been gathered and objects such as the table and ‘foot box’ have been reproduced using images and measurements indicated in Crawford’s texts. The video work viewed on two monitors consists of a video with written text and one with images. The text piece uses excerpts from Crawford’s books while the other uses images shot within the reconstructed séance room. ‘Experiment M’ explores Crawford’s relationship to the medium.
